A fine watch is made to be worn. That is the whole point of it. But every day on the wrist brings small risks: a desk edge, a door frame, a bracelet brushing against another. This guide brings together everything that keeps a luxury watch looking the way it did on the day you bought it, so you can wear it without the worry.

Why condition matters more than ever

For collectors, condition is value. An unpolished case with crisp edges and its original finish is worth more than the same watch after a refinish, and buyers increasingly ask for both. Polishing removes hairline scratches by removing metal, and every polish softens the sharp lines and bevels the watchmaker intended. It cannot be undone.

That is why the best approach is to stop the marks from reaching the metal in the first place, rather than paying to remove them later.

Everyday habits that prevent most marks

Most scratches come from ordinary moments, not accidents. A few habits make a real difference:

  • Take it off for physical jobs. DIY, gardening, the gym and moving furniture are where the deepest marks happen.
  • Watch the desk. Resting your wrist on a laptop or a hard desk, known as desk diving, is the single biggest cause of scratches on clasps.
  • Mind doors and frames. Bezels and case sides take knocks when you reach through doorways or into car footwells.
  • Keep it apart from other jewellery. Bracelets and rings worn on the same wrist rub against the case and links.
  • Fasten it over something soft. Put it on and take it off over a bed or a towel, not a stone worktop.

Protect the surfaces that take the knocks

Even with good habits, the clasp, bracelet links, bezel and case sides will gather marks over time. The most effective protection is a layer that takes the wear instead of the metal.

Watch protection film, sometimes called watch PPF, is a thin, optically clear film cut to the exact shape of each surface. Fitted well, it is close to invisible, it keeps polished and brushed finishes looking as they should, and it lifts away cleanly with no residue. It protects against the everyday scratches and scuffs that would otherwise mean a polish. You can read how we fit it on our services page.

Store it properly

When the watch is off the wrist, give it its own space:

  • Use a watch box, roll or pouch with a soft lining, with each watch in its own compartment.
  • Keep it away from magnets. Speakers, tablet covers, some phone cases and bag clasps can magnetise a mechanical movement, making it run fast.
  • Avoid extremes of heat and cold, such as a car dashboard in summer.
  • For travel, use a padded pouch and keep the watch in your hand luggage or on your wrist.

Keep water out

A water resistance rating describes testing conditions, not a promise for life. Before swimming, check that a screw-down crown is fully closed, never operate a chronograph's pushers underwater unless the watch is designed for it, and rinse the watch in fresh water after the sea or a pool. Seals age, so have the water resistance tested whenever the watch is serviced.

Service it on schedule

A mechanical movement needs cleaning and fresh lubrication every few years. Intervals vary by brand, typically somewhere between five and ten years, so follow the manufacturer's guidance. When you book a service, ask whether the case and bracelet will be refinished. If you want to keep the original finish, ask for it not to be polished.

Keep it secure, insured and authentic

Protection is not only about scratches. Read our guides on keeping your watch safe from theft, insuring a luxury watch in the UK and spotting a fake before you buy.

Wear it

The point of all this is not to keep a watch in a safe. It is to wear it every day, knowing it will still look right in ten years. If you would like your watch protected, tell us about it and we will reply with a quote.
